My Sister's Latest (Mini) Big Chop!

When I think about why and how I became Naturally Curious in the first place, two people immediately come to mind: my mom and my sister. Years before I even considered giving up the creamy crack (and I was addicted you'all), both my mom and my sister went back and forth between relaxed and natural hair states like it was no thing. My sister in particular just loves changing up her hair in general no matter what state its in - and from ever since I could remember she's always been more courageous than I ever was in that department. If I am Naturally Curious, then she is Naturally Fearless. In fact, the lessons I'm just now beginning to embrace in my own hair journey - to not be a slave to your hair, to enjoy your hair, to just have a little fun with it sometimes and not take it so seriously - are all rooted in observing my baby sister over the years doing just that. At this point, I've lost count of the amount of times I've seen my sister transition from a relaxer briefly, then chop all her relaxed hair off like it was no thing, rock her natural hair for five days or five years, and then relax it again if she felt like it or wanted a change. And while the rest of the world freaked out whenever she would take the scissors to her hair or make any kind of drastic hair change, her mantra would always be "Relax, its just hair. It'll grow back". Speaking of scissors - my sister also is one of a few women I know who has never been the least bit afraid to use them and use them often. And whether relaxed or natural, homegirl can and will rock the heck out of a short cut. With that said, enter my sister's latest mini big chop. This time I got the opportunity to record the process and watch her take another step in her ongoing hair journey. For my sister, its never been about the destination or about a specific hair goal, its always been about having fun, projecting the look she wants to project along the journey. I'm not sure where her hair journey will take her next, but for now, she's rocking her natural TWA!! Check out her big chop pictures and video :)

  1. She has a great attitude about her hair. It is just hair and if more people thought like that we would all feel freer to do whatever we wanted.

  2. Very nice. I love that she's got perspective on her hair and is not bound by anything but her own desire for change.

    Loving it!

  5. My little sister was the exact same way once she went natural. She would switch up between relaxers, extensions, weaves...and then she'd just BC, rock the TWA for a while, and start over. Finally she settled into Sisterlocks and that's what she's been wearing for about 10 years now.

So I too am a member of the club of Big Sisters Who Admire Their Little Sisters... ;) Your little sister's hair looks gorgeous.

  6. Thanks LBELL! I'll be sure to pass on your kind words to her :) Oh, if we could all be a little more like our little sisters when it comes to our own manes! But until then...we'll be in the Big Sister club and continue to admire their courage :)
