My Protective Styles This Week: The Bun and The French Roll

Monday, February 06, 2012

Having recently taken down my mini twists, I decided to keep my hair stretched after washing it and challenged myself to wear a protective style every day this past week. Initially after washing my hair I had the urge to just do a wash and go and wear my hair out in its curly state (since I haven't done that in a long time!). But I decided to stay on track with my winter hair care plan and stick with styles that keep my ends tucked away and protected from the cold, dry air. I'm not the best at coming up with fancy updos on the fly, so I turned to 2 simple protective styles that I definitely know how to do: the bun and the french roll.

Buns

Basic twisted bun, no bangs
Double fat twist bun with rolled & tucked bang

Basic Bun with flat twisted bang

French Roll
French Roll, back
French Roll, side-swept bangs

French Roll, back

Nighttime Maintenance: Whether I wore a bun or french roll that day - every night I would take down the style, lightly spritz my hair with my water/aloe vera juice mix, and then moisturize/seal the ends with Oyin Hair Dew or my Honey Hemp conditioner. As I was doing this I would also smooth the hair in a downward motion to release any shed hairs. Then I would put it up into a loose bun with a stretched out scrunchie and tie it down with my silk scarf.
